On October 14, 2021, Milimani Magistrate Jane Kamau will rule on the detention of three police officers - Inspector Philip Mbithi, Corporal Kamakia Mutuma Boniface, and Precious Mwende Mwinzi - who were arrested after Masten Mulimu Wanjala, a self-proclaimed serial killer, escaped from their custody.

The officers are accused of aiding a prisoner to escape from custody and failing to prevent Wanjala's escape from Jogoo Road Police Station on October 13, 2021.

Prosecutors have requested that the officers be detained for 14 days to allow for the conclusion of the probe, but the officers' lawyers, Danstan Omari and Shadrack Wambui, have vehemently opposed their detention.

Omari told the court that the Director of Criminal Investigation had recommended the officers to be charged, but the Director of Public Prosecutions allegedly refused to sign the charge sheet.

The lawyers have applied for the suspects to be released on cash bail to enable the investigating officers complete their investigation.

‘We plead with the court to release the suspect on bail or bond and impose conditions and the suspect will comply with the court orders imposed against them,’ Omari urged the court.
