Kenya has taken a firm stance against the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) jurisdiction in the ongoing maritime dispute with Somalia, with Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Macharia Kamau stating that the country will not recognize the court's verdict.

Speaking on the matter, Kamau emphasized that Kenya's decision is based on the court's 'obvious and inherent bias' and its 'unsuitability to resolve the dispute at hand.'

The ICJ is set to announce its verdict in the maritime case on 12 October 2021, with Somalia and Kenya at odds over the delineation of their maritime border in the Indian Ocean. The disputed area spans a vast 100,000 km2, rich in fish and potential hydrocarbons.

Kenya's decision comes as the ICJ prepares to deliver its verdict, with Somalia yet to react to the Kenyan government's stance.
