On October 4, 2021, a crackdown on illicit brews in Muhaya village, Hamisi, Vihiga County, turned deadly when a police officer fatally shot a suspect outside the Hamisi Law Courts.
Edwin Ndege, 26, was the victim. His family now alleges that Ndege was involved in a love triangle with the killer officer.
According to Rev Alphonse Adebe, Ndege's father, his son was fighting over a woman with a police officer. This contradicts police reports, which stated that Ndege had been arrested for assaulting a police officer and incitement.
Crackdown ¶
Police officers from Serem were carrying out a crackdown on illicit brews in Muhaya village on October 1, 2021.
Mr Adebe claimed that his son went to witness the crackdown and got caught up in a dispute with a police officer over a woman.
The family says they rushed Ndege to hospital after he was beaten by the officer, but he was later discharged.
However, the police officer inquired about Ndege's condition from a friend and later asked him to go to the police station to pick up his motorcycle, which had been impounded.
When Ndege arrived at the police station, he was locked up and booked for court on Monday, October 4, 2021.
“We were not allowed to see my son and only asked to meet him in court,” said Rev Adebe.
Senior police officers, including Vihiga County Police Commander Benjamin Ong'ombe, are yet to comment on the matter.
AK47 Rifle ¶
At the time of the shooting, Ndege and ten other suspects were being processed for arraignment at Hamisi Law Court on Monday, October 4, 2021.
According to a report compiled by Serem Police Station, the officer fired four rounds of ammunition at the deceased from an AK47 rifle number 5533966.
