On the streets of Rabat, Morocco, a rare sight can be seen - a female taxi driver behind the wheel. Souad Hdidou, 33, is the only woman licensed to drive a taxi in the capital, and one of a few in the country.

According to Reuters, Hdidou started her career as a truck driver after dropping out of school and later worked for a fish distribution company. However, she switched to taxis for better pay and greater freedom.

"I'm the kind who likes challenges," Hdidou said, as she navigates the city's roads in her blue sedan.

With a heart-shaped talisman with religious verses dangling from the rear view mirror, Hdidou has built a solid customer base, including mothers who trust her to pick up their kids from school and women who feel more comfortable with her at the wheel.

"We need more women taxi drivers," said Nouhila Asah, a female client, who appreciates the freedom to have conversations and talk freely over the phone with Hdidou.

Despite facing challenges, including sexual harassment, Hdidou remains determined to succeed in the male-dominated industry. She earns enough to pay her mortgage and support her family in the countryside.

Even for men, the taxi business is tough in Morocco, with many drivers lacking access to state health and pension coverage. The taxi operating licence is costly, with many drivers 'renting' it from well-off individuals with the right connections.

"The cost of renting the licence as well as car operating expenses account for up to 70% of my monthly revenue," Hdidou said.

As she works towards her childhood dream of international transport, Hdidou is now in the process of obtaining different types of driving licences.

"My wish is to work in international transport... This is Souad's life," she said, laughing.
