On October 8, 2021, a heated exchange erupted in the Kenyan parliament between Garissa Township MP Aden Duale and Kisumu County Woman Representative Rozaah Akinyi Buyu.
During a debate on insecurity in Northern Kenya, Duale paused to address Buyu, accusing her of interrupting him and shouting at him.
“Those of us who do not come from Northern Kenya, kindly, please don’t play party politics. Don’t shout at me, I am not your boyfriend,” Duale remarked.
Buyu was not impressed, seeking the intervention of the acting speaker, Kibwezi East MP Jessica Mbalu.
“Madam speaker, is the Honorable Member in order to suggest that I, Rozaah Buyu, want him as a boyfriend,” Buyu stated.
Mbalu demanded that Duale take back his statement and apologize, but the former Majority Leader remained defiant.
“Madam Speaker, as a ranking member and as a person who professes the Islamic faith, I have absolutely no need of a girlfriend whether it is Rozaah Buyu or anybody. She should shut up,” Duale responded.
