On Monday, Google's Vice President of Engineering for Android confirmed that the latest version of the OS, Android 12, will be called Snow Cone, marking the return of the dessert naming tradition that was discontinued in 2019.

Although the company had stopped using dessert names publicly, they continued to use internal code names that followed the original alphabetical naming scheme. For example, Android 10 was known as Quince Tart, and Android 11 was known as Red Velvet Cake.

With the confirmation of Snow Cone as the official name for Android 12, it seems that the company will continue to use dessert names, albeit in a more subtle way. In fact, we already know that Android 13 will be called Tiramisu, thanks to a reveal in a public AOSP code change.
