On October 6, 2021, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi sparked a heated debate on social media after claiming that the government had dispatched bulldozers to demolish Deputy President William Ruto's Weston Hotel in Lang'ata, Nairobi County.
The MP shared photos of bulldozers, alleging that they were spotted near the hotel, and wrote, 'The deep state is indeed cornered. They have today decided to express their fury by attempting to demolish Weston Hotel.'
However, Litkenya.com could not independently verify the claims, and it is unclear whether the bulldozers were indeed dispatched to bring the hotel down.
Despite the uncertainty, the news sparked a mixed reaction from Kenyans, with some supporting the plan to demolish the hotel if it was acquired illegally.
Sheryl Akoth commented, 'Where is the problem yet it was acquired illegally? Give the public what belongs to it.'
Others, however, opposed the idea of pulling down the hotel buildings, citing the thousands of Kenyans who depend on it to provide for their families.
It is worth noting that in 2019, Dr. Ruto admitted that the land where Weston Hotel sits was acquired illegally, and that he unknowingly bought it from people who had grabbed it from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).
