For years, smartwatch users have been plagued by poor battery life. Despite advancements in technology, many smartwatches still struggle to last more than a day on a single charge.
However, a new patent from Samsung suggests that the company is working on a game-changing solution: a solar-powered smartwatch.
According to LetsGoDigital, Samsung has filed a patent for an 'Electronic device comprising solar cells of multiple types' with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The patent, which was published on September 16, 2021, describes a solar watch band that will continuously charge the watch via solar energy as the user goes about their daily activities.
While Samsung is not the first company to explore solar charging for wearables, the technology has the potential to revolutionize the way we charge our smartwatches.
Garmin and Casio have already demonstrated the viability of solar charging, with Garmin offering a range of solar-powered watches, including the affordable Instinct Solar and the more expensive Fenix 6 series and Tactix Delta.
It's likely that Samsung will release a new wearable lineup that features solar-powered technology, rather than updating the existing Galaxy Watch 5. This will give the company time to perfect the technology and bring a solution that won't be a downgrade to what's available in the market.
