Kenya's mobile market has experienced significant growth, with the number of subscriptions reaching 51 million in the three months ending March 2019, as reported by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) in its latest quarterly report, published on July 4, 2019.
This represents a 3.1% increase from the previous quarter's 49.5 million subscriptions, with mobile penetration rising to 106.8% due to an increase in SIM card ownership as customers seek offers from various providers.
Airtel Networks Limited saw its market share increase by 2.7 percentage points to 26.1%, while Safaricom PLC's share decreased marginally from 63.3% to 62.4%. Telkom Kenya's share dropped from 9.0% to 7.9%, and Finserve Africa Limited's share decreased by 0.8 percentage points to 3.4%.
Mobile money subscriptions also saw a 1.4% increase to 32 million, with 564.8 million mobile money transfer transactions valued at KSh. 2.1 trillion recorded during the quarter. Mobile commerce transactions reached 571.5 million, valued at KSh. 1.84 trillion, with person-to-person transfers valued at KSh. 737 billion.
Additionally, data subscriptions increased by 2.5% to 46.8 million, while free-to-air television channels rose to 81 from 75 in the previous quarter. Radio FM stations remained unchanged at 173.
The National Kenya Computer Incident Response Team (National KE-CIRT) detected 11.2 million cyber threats, up from 10.2 million, and issued 14,078 cyber threat advisories to affected organizations, an increase from the 12,138 advisories issued in the previous period.
The postal/courier sub-sector saw a decline in its numbers, with 716,193 items sent, down from 1.1 million in the previous quarter.
