On October 4, 2021, President Uhuru Kenyatta addressed the ongoing media coverage of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalism (ICIJ) Pandora Papers leaks.
According to a statement from the President's office, President Kenyatta's attention had been drawn to comments surrounding the Pandora Papers.
While he would respond comprehensively on his return from a state visit to the Americas, he made the following intervening response:
'That these reports will go a long way in enhancing the financial transparency and openness that we require in Kenya and around the globe. The movement of illicit funds, proceeds of crime and corruption thrive in an environment of secrecy and darkness.'
The President emphasized that the Pandora Papers and subsequent follow-up audits would lift the veil of secrecy and darkness for those who could not explain their assets or wealth.
He concluded by saying, 'Thank you.'
President Kenyatta's statement was made through his spokesperson, Kanze Dena Mararo.
