On October 4, 2021, President Uhuru Kenyatta finally spoke out about the Pandora Papers scandal, which had been making headlines for days.
According to the BBC, President Kenyatta and six of his family members are among leaders who have been exposed in one of the biggest leaks of financial documents.
President Kenyatta's statement, issued by State House, acknowledged the reports but did not deny or accept that he had stashed the money in the accounts.
He said he would issue a comprehensive response once he returned to Kenya from his tour.
However, in a statement that was released on Monday, President Kenyatta expressed his support for the Pandora Papers, saying that they would 'go a long way in enhancing the financial transparency and openness that we require in Kenya and around the globe.'
He also stated that the movement of illicit funds, proceeds of crime, and corruption thrive in an environment of secrecy and darkness, and that the Pandora Papers would 'lift that veil of secrecy and darkness for those who cannot explain their assets or wealth.'
