On October 4, 2021, nine suspects escaped from police custody at Bomet Central police station in the wee hours of the morning. The escape occurred after the suspects cut through metallic grills at the back of their cell.

Bomet Central Sub-county police Commander Musa Omari Imamai revealed that the escapees included four juveniles, whose ages were not immediately established. The juveniles were being held for assault and theft offences, while the other suspects were being held for various other crimes.

According to Omari, the escapees squeezed themselves out of their cell at around 4:20 am. However, one of the escapees was quickly apprehended by police officers and is now assisting with investigations.

Omari also revealed that two of the escapees were due to appear in court on the day of the escape to answer charges of theft. The other two suspects were arrested over the weekend during an illicit brew crackdown.

The escapees are Clinton Nyakundi, Dominic Cheruiyot, Erick Bett, Victor Korir, Emmanuel Mutai, Clement Ng'eno, Titus Rotich, Vincent Kibet, and Victor Kipkirui. Police are urging the public to provide any information that may lead to the arrest of the remaining escapees.

“We are optimistic that the suspects will be brought to book and action taken against them for escaping from custody,” said Omari.

The incident has raised concerns about the sharing of cells between adult and juvenile suspects at the Bomet police station.
