Kenya's Joyciline Jepkosgei Wins Maiden London Marathon Title

On Sunday, 3rd October 2021, Kenyan long-distance runner Joyciline Jepkosgei made history by winning her first title at the London Marathon, becoming the seventh fastest female marathoner in history.

She clocked in an impressive 2 hours 17 minutes and 43 seconds, beating Ethiopia's Degitu Azimeraw who finished second in 2 hours 17 minutes 58 seconds.

Another Ethiopian, Ashete Bekere, came in third in 2 hours 18 minutes 18 seconds, while world record holder Brigid Kosgei finished fourth in a time of 2 hours 18 minutes 40 seconds.

ODM leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto were among the first to congratulate her on her fantastic run.

"Congratulations Joyciline Jepkosgei on the fantastic run to win the #LondonMarathon. We are proud of you for flying our flag high. Well in! Keep running and keep inspiring our upcoming athletes. Hongera!", tweeted Raila.

For his part, DP Ruto said: "Great performance by Joyciline Jepkosgei for winning the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon. Congratulations Vincent Kipchumba for coming 2nd in the men’s race. We celebrate your victory and associate with your incredible drive."
