On 3rd October 2021, the Swiss referendum on gay marriages highlighted a concerning trend in Western European nations and America. Almost two-thirds of voters agreed to legalize gay marriages, making Switzerland one of the last Western European nations to adopt this path. This development raises questions about the erosion of foundational values and tenets that built these nations.
For many, the story of Israel's societal relapse in the Book of Judges serves as a cautionary tale. The passage reads, 'The people served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the LORD had done for Israel.' However, after the death of that generation, another generation grew up, unaware of the LORD and the great things He had done for Israel. They did evil in the eyes of the LORD and served the Baals, forsooking the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of Egypt.
Many nations in Western Europe and America were built on strong biblical foundations, which were reflected in their culture and governance systems. For instance, over 30 countries have the cross on their flags, symbolizing the purifying power of the blood of Christ. The founders of these nations took seriously the biblical words, 'Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD' (Psalms 33:12), believing in the favor that accrues when God is placed at the center of national life.
When the US was born in 1776, the unity of the colonies was so significant that they adopted the motto: 'E pluribus unum - Out of Many, One.' However, during the Cold War, the threat of Communism led to a renewed emphasis on the importance of God in American life. In 1955, Congress passed a law requiring that 'In God We Trust' appears on all American currency, and in 1956, it became the national motto by law.
Today, there is a move to remove this motto from currency and government documents. However, a joint poll conducted by USA Today, CNN, and Gallup found that 90% of Americans still support 'In God We Trust' as national motto. Interestingly, their faith seems to have been rewarded, as the walls of Communism came tumbling down in 1990, while American ideals lived on.
Similarly, in Kenya, the Church worked hard to ensure that the preamble in the original Ghai draft of the Constitution was changed to read, 'We, the people of Kenya...RECOGNIZING the Supremacy and Sovereignty of the Almighty God of all creation...' This change reflects the understanding that a nation's destiny cannot be founded on the supremacy of a document.
Unfortunately, a new generation is arising that cares little about God, and a strong anti-God, and more specifically, antichrist spirit has sprung up, intent on turning national values upside down. It behoves the older generation to up their game if the foundations are not to be demolished.
