Published on July 4, 2019, the High Commissioner to Kenya, Nic Hailey, announced plans to extend student visas in the United Kingdom.
During a meeting with Deputy President William Ruto at his Karen office in Nairobi, Hailey explained that the extended visas would allow students to gather industry experience in the UK.
"It is through attachments and internships that best practices and innovations are hatched. As such, student visa extension would be an important consideration to fill into our new immigration laws," Hailey said.
Hailey, who is set to complete his four-year tenure in Kenya at the end of the month, highlighted the significant growth in the relationship between Kenya and the UK, particularly in investment and commerce.
Kenya's unique trade link with the UK is almost balanced, with many British companies expanding their presence in Kenya and generating thousands of jobs, Hailey noted.
He added that renewed focus on Kenya's agriculture through innovations and value addition by British firms would create more opportunities.
Deputy President Ruto praised Hailey's exemplary work during his tenure and expressed Kenya's commitment to sustaining its engagement with the UK.
"We will always be looking for opportunities to partner with the United Kingdom so as to better our development trajectory," Ruto observed.
