Laikipia University student Mercy's life was cut short in a tragic incident that has left the community in shock. The 18-year-old was stabbed to death by her estranged boyfriend on Wednesday, October 1, 2021, in her hostel room in Karuga village, Nyahururu Sub County.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect had been frequenting Mercy's house in the recent past before they parted ways. Neighbours reported that the couple constantly quarreled when they were together.
On the fateful day, the neighbours heard screams coming from the girl's hostel. The suspect allegedly broke into her house and attacked her. Witnesses who responded found the suspect had locked himself inside the house.
After breaking down the door, they found Mercy on the ground writhing in pain. The suspect had also attempted to take his own life, stabbing himself in the neck and abdomen.
Despite the efforts of well-wishers who tried to rush Mercy to the hospital, she succumbed to the stab wounds along the way. An irate mob had pounced on the suspect, but police officers responded in time to save him. He was rushed to Nyahururu County Referral hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
