Published on October 1, 2021, AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine has shown promising results in a U.S. clinical trial.

The vaccine, known as Vaxzevria, demonstrated 74% efficacy in preventing symptomatic disease, with 83.5% efficacy in people aged 65 and older.

The trial, which involved over 26,000 volunteers in the United States, Chile, and Peru, showed that there were no cases of severe or critical symptomatic COVID-19 among the participants who received the vaccine.

Dr. Anna Durbin, a vaccine researcher at Johns Hopkins University, praised the results, saying, “I was pleasantly surprised. It was also highly protective against severe disease and hospitalization.”

AstraZeneca is exploring booster doses for people who have already been vaccinated with two doses of either its own shot or mRNA-based vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna.

The vaccine is authorized for use in over 170 countries, and the company expects to file for U.S. approval later this year.
