On World Tourism Day, Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala highlighted the significance of major infrastructure projects at the Coast in boosting the recovery of the tourism industry. The Sh28 billion Dongo Kundu by-pass project, which links Mombasa to Kwale, is expected to spur the growth of the tourism sector at the South Coast.
According to Balala, the bypass will be a game-changer, easing access to the South Coast and providing a significant boost to the tourism industry. The project is part of the government's efforts to revitalize the sector, which has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, the government has prioritized the expansion of the Ukunda and Manda airports in Kwale and Lamu respectively. The Manda airport is being upgraded at Sh121 million, with the expansion of the runway from 2km to 2.4km enabling it to handle bigger aircraft of up to 300 passengers. Ukunda is also being upgraded at Sh2.3 billion, with plans to change its name to Diani to reflect its destination.
Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is upgrading the runway of Malindi Airport in Kilifi County from 1.4km to 2.4km. The upgrade of the three small airports at the Coast will enhance connectivity within the region and other parts of the world.
Destination Diani remains a key attraction in Kenya, and the government is focusing on ensuring seamless connectivity to support its growth. Domestic tourism has shown resilience during the COVID-19 period, with industry players like Diani Reef Beach Resort and Spa Managing Director Bobby Kamani applauding Kenyans for braving difficult conditions.
As the tourism industry continues to recover, players are calling for a full vaccination rollout plan to cover the entire length and breadth of the country. Kenya Tourism Board chairman Jimi Kariuki emphasized the importance of promoting sustainability in the sector through environmental and cultural heritage protection.
