Planning a wedding in Kenya can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to choosing the right type of marriage. While many couples opt for traditional Christian or customary weddings, others prefer the simplicity and affordability of a civil marriage.

Recently, Kenyan comedienne Esther Kazungu and her husband made headlines with their civil marriage, which cost a mere Ksh 60,000. Their story sparked a conversation about the benefits of civil marriages, and we're here to provide you with a comprehensive guide to planning your special day.

Did you know that Kenya recognizes five systems of marriage, including civil, Christian, customary, Hindu, and Islam? In Kenya, civil marriages are conducted by the Registrar of Marriages, Deputy County Commissioners, or Assistant County Commissioners.

Before you plan a civil marriage, you need to specify whether it's under a notice or a special license. If you choose the former, you'll need to place a 21-day notice before the marriage can take place, and both parties must be present when filling the notice form.

The cost of a civil marriage under a notice is Ksh 3,900. However, if you're unable to give a 21-day notice, you can apply for a special license. This will cost you Ksh 9,700, and you'll need to provide valid identification cards or passports, birth certificates, and sufficient proof that you're not married.

For foreign nationals, the requirements are the same, but you'll also need to produce a return air ticket, visa, or work permit. The marriage fee will be Ksh 9,700, and Ksh 16,700 for a garden wedding.

So, if you're considering a civil marriage in Kenya, this guide has got you covered. From the requirements to the costs, we'll walk you through the process to ensure your special day is nothing short of perfect.
