Published on September 29, 2021, a plan to expand the Murang'a municipality has ignited a heated debate among water companies. The expansion aims to serve at least 100,000 people, up from the current 30,000, according to Municipal Board Vice-Chairman James Waweru.
The proposal, drafted in July, seeks to extend the municipal boundaries towards Gaturi Ward, ending at Kaweru market on the Murang'a-Kiria-ini highway. Along the Murang'a-Sagana road, the boundary will be extended from Mathioya River bridge to Sagana bridge, an area currently under Gatamathi Water Company.
Muwasco will be granted the right to distribute water from Maragua River bridge to the area near Midway and Sammer village in Maragua. The move has sparked a row between water companies, with Muwasco set to operate in areas previously assigned to Kahuti, Gatamathi, and Murang'a South Water companies.
James Waweru, Municipal Board Vice-Chairman, confirmed the proposal, stating that Muwasco has the capacity to provide the required volumes of water in underserved areas.
