On September 23, 2021, a woman was arrested at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after she was found attempting to pass herself off as a maternity patient.

Elizabeth Shokau Musembi, the suspect, was armed with an antenatal booklet at the time of her arrest.

According to the police, Musembi's plan was to get into the maternity ward and steal a baby.

She claimed she made her way to the hospital to enquire if she could be given an abandoned baby to take care of, but the police believe otherwise.

Following her arrest, Musembi was taken to KNH for a pregnancy test, which revealed that she was not pregnant.

She was then recommended to be taken to Mathare mental hospital for assessment.

On September 27, 2021, Milimani senior principal magistrate Bernard Ochoi ordered for Musembi's detention for three days pending investigations.

Corporal Jackline Makumba, the investigating officer, had applied for the suspect's detention for five days, but the magistrate declined, saying three days were enough to complete investigations.
