On September 27, 2021, Kenyatta University School of Law students Sidney Tambasi and Martin Kioko made history by winning the African Human Rights Moot Court Competition, the biggest competition of its kind in Africa.

The duo, both fourth-year students, outshone a combined team from Stellenbosch University (South Africa) and Eduardo Mondlane University (Mozambique) in the finals, held at Stellenbosch University in South Africa.

Speaking shortly after the announcement, Tambasi expressed gratitude to the Kenyatta University staff and the support team that steered them to victory.

“We are greatly indebted to everyone that supported us and ensured that we make the podium finish,” said Tambasi.

The African Human Rights Moot Court Competition, which brings together students, scholars, practitioners, and leading jurists in Africa for a one-week contest, marked a milestone this year with the renaming of the event to the Cristof Heyns African Human Rights Moot Court Competition in honor of Prof. Cristof Heyns, a renowned human rights professor who passed away in March 2021.
