On a day that saw new Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat watch from the sidelines, AFC Leopards defeated champions Tusker 1-0 in their opening 2021-2022 FKF Premier League match at the Thika Sub County Stadium on Sunday, September 26, 2021.

Despite Tusker bolstering their squad with over 12 new players, including Tanzanian import Ibrahim Joshua and Ugandan striker Deogratius Ojok, Leopards' composure and defending saw them take the lead from close range in the 18th minute after Musa curled the ball into the net.

Leading 1-0 from the break, Tusker were handed the opportunity to level the scores from 12 yards but acting captain Boniface Muchiri missed from the spot, sending his penalty wide.

Leopards' Man of the Match performance was put up by Isaac Kipyegon, who played a crucial role in the team's fourth-place finish last season. The match saw Leopards settle early into the game, rather than Tusker who headed into the match as favourites.

With Tusker barred from signing any new players due to failing to pay former players and coaches who have sued them, Leopards' bench was composed of youngsters from their youth team.
