On September 26, 2021, the 47th edition of the Berlin Marathon took place, with Ethiopian athletes making a strong impression. Guye Adola emerged victorious in the men's race, crossing the finish line in 2:05:45.
Kenyan Bethwel Yegon came in second with a time of 2:06:14, while compatriot Kenenisa Bekele finished third in 2:06:47. Bekele's performance was notable, but he still trailed behind Eliud Kipchoge's world record of 2:01:39 set in the 2018 Berlin Marathon.
Bekele's attempt to dethrone Kipchoge as the greatest marathoner ever fell short. The Ethiopian athlete's time was over 6 minutes slower than Kipchoge's record.
Meanwhile, the women's race saw Ethiopian dominance, with Gotytom Gebreslase taking the top spot in 2:20:09. Hiwot Gebrekidan and Helen Tola followed closely behind, finishing in 2:21:23 and 2:23:05, respectively.
Kenya's Edith Chelimo came in fourth with a time of 2:24:33, followed by Ethiopian Shure Demise and Fancy Chemutai in 2:24:43 and 2:24:58, respectively.
