On September 24, 2021, 14 prisoners made a daring escape from Nanyuki GK Prison, prompting a massive search operation by the police.
According to police documents, the escape occurred on a Friday night, and officers from a nearby station responded promptly to gunshots emanating from the prison, leading to the recapture of eight prisoners.
As of September 25, 2021, six prisoners remained at large, and the police were still searching for them.
Prisoners who escaped had been convicted of murder and robbery with violence, and they cut through the doors using a hacksaw before jumping over the perimeter wall.
“Officers from the station, DCI and CIPU were mobilised and immediately rushed to the scene map ref 853583 about 3km west of the station,” the police report stated.
“They established that 14 prisoners charged with capital offences had escaped from the said prison,” it continued.
This incident comes barely two months after eight prisoners went missing after they staged a daring escape from Vihiga Prison on July 23, 2021.
One of the previous escape incidents occurred during the breakfast period, and the police managed to re-arrest one of the suspects, Maurice Taabu.
