As the situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate, the country teeters on the edge of a devastating economic crisis. According to a recent analysis by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), a 10-13% hit in GDP could bring Afghanistan to the brink of near universal poverty, with a potential 97% poverty rate, by the middle of 2022.

Despite significant progress made over the last 20 years, including a doubling of per capita income, a nine-year increase in life expectancy, and a rise in years of schooling, the country's economy is now on the brink of collapse. Skyrocketing food prices and an interrupted economy have led to a precipitous rise in food insecurity, with health and wellbeing expected to plummet in the coming months.

One major factor that could exacerbate the situation is the status and space accorded to women and girls. Afghanistan has made significant strides in women's employment, with women making up over one-fifth of the civil service and one-fourth of members of Parliament. However, the social impact of the latest developments may come down to how these gains are protected and preserved.

As the situation in Afghanistan continues to unfold, it is imperative that we support the local economic, social, and environmental assets that have been strengthened over the last 20 years. By harnessing local networks and community efforts, we can help keep the most vulnerable households afloat and essential services alive. This includes providing assistance to farmers, ensuring health and education services continue, and supporting community efforts through cash-for-work and social protection.
