Published on September 24, 2021, the European Commission has proposed a universal charger for all phones, including iPhones, to reduce electronic waste and promote consumer convenience.

The proposal, which could significantly impact the smartphone industry, suggests that USB-C would become the standard across devices, including phones, tablets, cameras, headphones, portable speakers, and handheld videogame consoles.

According to Margrethe Vestager, executive vice-president for the European Commission's Europe Fit for the Digital Age strategy, the decision to move to a universal charger came after companies failed to find a solution themselves.

“European consumers were frustrated long enough about incompatible chargers piling up in their drawers,” she said in a statement.

The new regulations would require full interoperability on both sides of the cable, ensuring that any charger can be used with any device. The proposal also aims to harmonize fast charging technology, prevent companies from falsely limiting charging speeds, and provide better information for customers about their devices.

Apple, which has long argued that regulators should focus on the plug that goes into the wall rather than the end on the phone, would be required to adopt the new standard. The company's Lightning port would not be allowed under the new plans.

The proposals will have to be adopted by the European parliament and the council through their usual processes. If it passes, the industry will be given 24 months to adapt before the new regulations come into force.
