On July 4, 2019, Kirinyaga County Assembly made a significant decision regarding the nomination of Dr Timothy Theuri Kabaiku as the Health Chief Executive Committee (CEC) member.
The assembly rejected the nomination, citing that Dr Theuri lacks the requisite experience to hold the position. This decision was made by the vetting and appointment committee, which deemed him unqualified for the role.
County Governor Ann Waiguru will now have to nominate another person to fill the vacant position. The assembly's majority leader, James Murango, stated that it was the unanimous decision of the vetting committee that Dr Theuri is not qualified for the position, especially during a time when nurses are at odds with the County Government.
The MCAs have urged the County Government to nominate another person as soon as possible for vetting. However, they emphasized that they will only confirm a qualified person for the position.
The assembly members argued that although the County health sector is in a crisis, they would not be rushed into nominating someone who is unqualified to hold the position and cannot solve the challenges facing the County.
