Published on September 24, 2021, the National Housing Corporation (NHC) has embarked on a Sh384 million redevelopment project in Changamwe estate, Mombasa. The ambitious project aims to construct 9,000 new housing units, replacing the existing 792 units in the estate.

According to Housing Secretary and NHC Managing Director Patrick Bucha, the project will prioritize existing tenants who have cleared their rent arrears and signed a tenancy agreement. The redevelopment plan includes the construction of high-rise residential housing units, commercial spaces, and social amenities such as schools, recreational spaces, and a sports facility.

However, the project's progress has been hindered by outstanding rent arrears amounting to Sh124 million. Bucha expressed concerns over the issue, stating that the corporation's management and tenant leaders are working together to resolve the matter harmoniously and with utmost speed.

Residents affected by the project will not be compensated, as construction will be done in phases, allowing them to move into new houses before their old ones are demolished and upgraded. Phase One of the project, which saw the construction of 84 units, is already complete.

Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi welcomed the project, stating that it will improve the living standards of residents. The NHC has developed other estates, including Bububu and Jomo Kenyatta Makande.
