On September 17, 2021, a married woman went missing, leaving her husband worried about her whereabouts. The woman's husband received a call from her claiming to have been kidnapped by unknown people demanding Sh200,000 as ransom.

However, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) discovered that the woman was actually on Loita Street in Nairobi's central business district, having eloped with a cab driver to his one-roomed house in Malaa.

Her relatives formed a WhatsApp group to raise money for her release, sending Sh17,000 and later Sh40,000 to the alleged kidnappers. The two women were then arrested in Sagana on September 20, 2021, and taken to Embakasi Police Station, pending arraignment on September 23, 2021.
