On September 23, 2021, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) made a significant bust along the southern bypass in Nairobi. A vehicle carrying three Catholic missionaries from the Benedictine Sisters was impounded after it was found to be ferrying a consignment of cannabis and illicit liquor.

The missionaries, who were traveling from Malaba to a convent in Karen, Nairobi, were flagged down by detectives from the DCI Langata division. However, the driver failed to stop, prompting a high-speed chase.

According to the DCI, the high-speed chase left the nuns 'silently reciting their rosaries and meditating the sacred mysteries.' The driver eventually jumped from the vehicle as they approached the Kabage area and disappeared into the darkness.

During the search of the vehicle, detectives recovered 13 bales of cannabis sativa and three jerrycans containing 35 litres of locally distilled Chang'aa brew.

The sisters claimed they had boarded the vehicle at Malaba on the Kenya-Uganda border, paid their fare, and the driver was just about to drop them off in Karen when the detectives flagged down the vehicle.
