On September 22, 2021, Chelsea secured a spot in the League Cup's fourth round by defeating Aston Villa 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel made 10 changes to his starting lineup, and German striker Timo Werner scored his first goal of the season in the 54th minute, heading a cross from Reece James past Villa keeper Jed Steer.

However, Villa hit back through youngster Cameron Archer's header, sending the tie into the penalty shootout. Ben Chilwell struck the bar, but James made no mistake, scoring the winning penalty in the top corner of the net.

Meanwhile, Manchester United crashed out of the League Cup as West Ham United avenged a weekend loss in the Premier League with a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford, thanks to an early goal from Manuel Lanzini.

Other results from the League Cup included Tottenham Hotspur winning 3-2 on penalties against Wolverhampton Wanderers, despite surrendering an early 2-0 lead, and Arsenal cruising into the fourth round with a 3-0 home win against third-tier AFC Wimbledon.
