On September 20, 2021, a family in Nakuru was left reeling after the discovery of the lifeless bodies of two children, aged three and five, at their Milimani apartments. The children's father, Dr. James Gakara, an obstetrician at Optimum Current Hospital, Nakuru, was suspected of killing them before attempting suicide.
According to Nakuru County Commander Beatrice Kiraguri, preliminary investigations indicate that Dr. Gakara injected the children with a yet-to-be-established drug, leading to their death. The police also recovered assorted drugs, used syringes, and a sharp kitchen knife at the doctor's flat.
Dr. Gakara died on the morning of the incident while undergoing treatment at the Nakuru Level 5 Hospital. His wife was not at home when the bodies were found, and neighbours alerted the police after reporting a suspect incident.
Dr. Gakara's sister, Mary Nyaguthii, expressed doubt that her brother could have taken his children's lives, stating that the accounts given by those who visited the scene had many gaps in it.
