On February 5, 2021, Nairobi Metropolitan Area Council chairperson James Macharia appointed three board members to the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NAMATA): Mary Chege, Zachariah Mungai, and Ronald Ndegwa. However, their appointments were short-lived.
The High Court has quashed the appointments, pending a hearing and determination of a case challenging the appointments. The court cited the failure to meet constitutional requirements applicable in Public Service Appointments.
Furthermore, the court noted that the appointments, from one community, are not representative of the country's diversity fabric. This decision was made in response to a petition filed by advocate Manwa Hosea.
The Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NAMATA) aims to provide a mechanism for an integrated, efficient, and sustainable transport system within the metropolitan area. The metropolitan area includes Nairobi, Murang'a, Kiambu, Kajiado, and Machakos counties.
