On February 26, 2017, Kenya's top runners, including Wilson Kipsang, Dickson Chumba, and Gideon Kipketer, celebrated their Tokyo Marathon victories in the Japanese capital.

Fast forward to 2022, and the Tokyo Marathon has been postponed until March 6, with the 2022 edition cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The race was initially set for October 17 but has now been rescheduled.
"I would like to sincerely apologise not only to our runners and volunteers, but to everyone who has been looking forward to our event," said Tokyo Marathon Foundation race director Tadaaki Hayano, as reported by Kyodo news service.
This is the second consecutive year the Tokyo Marathon has been impacted by the pandemic, with last year's event limited to elite runners.
