On Saturday, a tragic hit-and-run incident occurred between Namgoi Market and Kapsabet town in Nandi County, leaving two women dead and three others injured.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect, Patrick Rono, was driving a Toyota Probox and was heading towards Eldoret when he allegedly hit a boda boda rider, prompting a chase by enraged riders.
As Rono attempted to evade the road users, he drove erratically and veered off the road within Kapsabet town, hitting the pedestrians. The driver claimed he was trying to avoid a head-on collision with a lorry.
"He was being trailed by enraged bodaboda riders. He drove erratically while evading the road users along the way. Unfortunately, he veered off the road within Kapsabet town and hit the pedestrians," said Shadrack Mutai, a witness.
The victims suffered injuries on their heads and legs, and the three injured individuals were taken to hospital and discharged.
The driver, Patrick Rono, was taken to Kapsabet central police station, where he is being interrogated. His family claims that he is suffering from mental illness and was under medication at the time of the incident.
"The suspect is being interrogated. The relatives, who are residents of Kapsabet, said that he was under medication. He drove out of the compound without anyone's knowledge and caused accidents," said Doris Chemos, Nandi central OCPD.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Kapsabet County referral hospital morgue, pending identification by their respective families.
