On 31 August 2021, Kenya lost a dedicated wildlife defender in Commander Bajila Kofa, who was brutally murdered near the Meru National Polytechnic.

As the fifth known Kenyan environmental defender killed in the last three years, Kofa's death serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by those protecting the country's wildlife.

With over 200 black and white rhinos under his care at Solio conservancy, Kofa played a crucial role in conserving Kenya's national heritage.

His murder, which is still under investigation, has sparked concerns about the safety of wildlife defenders and the need for enhanced protection.

As the government grapples with the aftermath of Kofa's death, it is essential to acknowledge the bravery and dedication of environmental defenders like him who risk their lives to protect Kenya's wildlife.

It is also crucial to ensure that those responsible for Kofa's murder are brought to justice, and that measures are put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
