On September 18, 2021, a group of fishermen from Litare beach in Rusinga Island, Homa Bay County, made a startling discovery while fishing in Lake Victoria.

Initially, they were thrilled to have caught a large quantity of omena, a type of fish, but their excitement was short-lived as they soon realized that their fishing net was weighed down by something abnormal.

Upon closer inspection, they discovered that they had actually netted five explosives, prompting them to raise an alarm through their beach management leadership.

Litare Beach Management Unit chair Isaiah Pero handed over the explosives to officers at Mbita Police Station, where they were later detonated with the help of bomb experts.

It is suspected that the explosives were dumped in Lake Victoria after World War II, possibly by colonial authorities.
