On September 17, 2021, the UK announced a significant change to its travel restrictions, removing Kenya from its 'red list' and paving the way for easier travel for thousands of passengers.

The decision, which takes effect at 4am on September 22, 2021, is part of a broader overhaul of the UK's travel system, which will see the current restrictions abolished and a new system introduced from October 2021.

Kenya is among eight countries that will be moved from the 'red list' to the 'amber list', a rank lower than red, which indicates countries considered too risky due to high Covid-19 cases or poor surveillance.

Under the new rules, people travelling from Kenya will be exempt from compulsory hotel quarantine, although they may be required to isolate for 10 days and take tests.

For now, at least until October 4, 2021, Kenyans travelling to England will have to provide a negative test result on arrival, not older than 72 hours, and take another test once they land, for those fully vaccinated.

According to the new rules, fully vaccinated people may not need to quarantine when arriving in the UK through Kenya, but those arriving through Kenya from countries on the 'red list' must take quarantine at their residences or hotels of their choice for 10 days after which they will take tests.
