On September 17, 2021, Microsoft Corp unveiled a massive share buyback program worth up to $60 billion, alongside a significant increase in its quarterly dividend.
The tech giant's new buyback program has no expiration date and may be terminated at any time, with the company committing to pay a dividend of $0.62 per share – a 6-cent increase from the previous quarter.
Microsoft has a history of stepping up its share buyback programs, announcing such initiatives every three years since 2013. The company previously initiated $40 billion share buyback programs in 2013 and 2016.
The new program comes as the company nears the end of a similar $40 billion program launched in 2019. Microsoft has already spent $23 billion from that program this year, leaving $8.7 billion remaining.
