Joseph Mwaniki, a 33-year-old entrepreneur from Nairobi, has turned his passion into a profitable business by turning old tyres into various products.
With a background in insurance, Mwaniki started his tyre-recycling business in 2012, initially working with his family.
After being approached by Akili Mali, a journalist from Taifa Leo, Mwaniki shared his story of how he started his business.
"I collect old tyres, clean and process them to create different products. The money I make from this business is not dependent on anyone else," Mwaniki said.
From tyres, Mwaniki produces shoes, belts, and other accessories. He also uses animal hides, fabric, and other materials to create unique products.
According to Mwaniki, his business has been successful, with him making a profit of over Sh5,000 per day.
"I sell each shoe for between Sh200 and Sh400, depending on the quality and the customer's budget," Mwaniki explained.
With his business thriving, Mwaniki has been able to build a comfortable home in the countryside and educate his two children.
However, Mwaniki faces stiff competition in the market, which he tries to overcome by creating unique and high-quality products.
"Innovation is the key to success in any business. It will help you stand out from your competitors," Mwaniki advised young entrepreneurs.
