On September 16, 2021, former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario was convicted in the 2016 Rio Olympics saga and handed a 6-year jail term with an alternative of Sh3.6 million fine.
Wario, who was dropped as Kenya's Ambassador to Austria in May 2019, was convicted alongside Team Kenya leader in the 2016 Rio Olympics Stephen Soi.
Soi was handed a 12-year jail term with an alternative of Sh105 million as fine, based on the sum misappropriated under his watch.
Under Section 48 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, a person found guilty can pay a fine equal to two times the sum lost.
Wario was found guilty of engaging in a project without prior planning and misappropriating allowances for three individuals who were not part of the Kenyan team.
At least Sh88.6 million was reported to have been embezzled following an investigation in November 2016.
