Elders from Marakwet East Sub County in Elgeyo Marakwet County are calling for clear demarcation of land and the issuance of title deeds to prevent constant conflicts.

According to James Kimisio, a leader of the elders, the community cannot continue living on communal land due to the increasing population, with over 50,000 people still residing on community land.

Kimisio emphasized that the lack of clear boundaries and documentation to prove ownership of land is a major source of conflict, which is likely to escalate with the involvement of the youth.

He stated, 'These young individuals do not understand the concept of communal land and thus they want a very clear demarcation and proof of ownership of land which has been a constant headache to parents.'

Dr. Ahmed Omar, the Elgeyo Marakwet County Commissioner, assured that the county government is working with the elders and other stakeholders to resolve the land conflicts.

However, Omar warned that people who engage in further clan conflicts will face the law, as several lives have been lost due to the land disputes.
