On September 14, 2021, a wave of violence swept through Lugari Sub-county, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. At least 15 houses were burnt to the ground, leaving families without homes or belongings.

The attacks were allegedly sparked by a land dispute between two neighbors, which turned deadly when one of the men fell ill and died. Reuben Sasaka's death last month had been a source of tension in the community, and it appears that the situation escalated into violence.

Residents of the affected villages, including Chenjeni, Kulumbeni, and Mutonyi, were targeted by the mob, who accused them of practicing witchcraft. Peter Viketi, one of the victims, denied the allegations, saying they were wrongly accused.

Deputy County Commissioner Scholastica Kosgei confirmed that police were investigating the matter and had arrested five suspects. The attack also affected learning at Mutonyi Primary School, with over 200 pupils from affected villages failing to report to school on Tuesday.

Headteacher John Soita expressed concern about the impact of the violence on the school and its students. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for communities to resolve their differences peacefully and seek help when needed.
