On September 15, 2021, the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement warning that the feud between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto is threatening the country's peace and unity.
The 23-member conference expressed concern that the public exchanges between the two top leaders are causing anxiety and have the potential to cause political violence if left unchecked.
According to the bishops, it is an 'open and sad reality' that the President and Deputy President are not reading from the same script, and their public exchanges are 'dangerous for the prevailing peace and tranquility in the Country and cannot be taken lightly.'
The bishops also cautioned that if Uhuru and Ruto continue to feud, their supporters might follow suit, which could undermine the country's unity and stability.
As Church leaders, they offered to step in and mediate a working arrangement between the two leaders, as provided by the Constitution, to help the country move forward.
