Published on September 16, 2021, a tragic incident occurred in Kinango, Kwale County, where two siblings were mauled to death by hyenas.
The siblings, aged one and two, were attacked by the wild animals while they were sleeping in their house around 9:30 am. Their mother, who was doing chores outside, was left to witness the horrific scene.
According to Kinango sub-county police commander Fred Ombaka, the villagers pursued the hyenas and managed to kill one of them.
Mr. Ombaka also confirmed that four villagers were injured during the confrontation with the hyenas, while the mother of the toddlers suffered injuries as she tried to rescue her children.
Chengoni sub-chief Jackson Chengo revealed that the hyenas had also attacked two people the previous night in a nearby village, leaving them with injuries.
The bodies of the two children were taken to Kinango Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem, while cases of human-wildlife conflict have increased in recent days in Kwale due to drought.
Wild animals, especially elephants, have been invading villages in Kinango, which borders the Tsavo National Park, in search of food and water, disrupting school activities and forcing learners to report late to school to avoid being attacked by the jumbos.
