On September 14, 2021, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPA) announced a significant increase in fuel prices, with Super Petrol rising by Ksh7.58, Diesel by Ksh7.94, and Kerosene by Ksh12.97 per litre.
As a result, Nairobi Matatu Operators Chairman Jimal Ibrahim, popularly known as Jimal Roho Safi, confirmed that matatu fares would increase, effective from September 15, 2021.
According to Jimal, the increase in fuel prices has made it challenging for matatu operators to survive, and they have reached an agreement to hike fares to cushion the industry.
“From tomorrow we will increase our fare due to fuel hike. Kindly bear with us,” Jimal wrote in a statement.
Branden Marshall, a top official of the matatus SACCOs and Public Service Vehicles (PSV), echoed Jimal's sentiments, stating that matatus cannot just work on fuel alone and must survive.
“Matatus cannot just be working on fuel alone, we must survive. To cushion the industry and also for us to survive, most SACCOs are planning to scrap off-peak hours in our schedules,” he told the media.
The new fuel prices, which took effect on September 14, 2021, are as follows: Petrol will retail at Ksh134.72 per litre in Nairobi, Diesel at Ksh115.60, and Kerosene at Ksh110.82. In Mombasa, Petrol will retail at Ksh132.46, Diesel at Ksh113.36, while Kerosene will retail at Ksh108.57.
