On September 15, 2021, a Form Two student from Kihumbu-ini Secondary School in Murang'a County, Mellan Njeri Njuguna, was seen carrying a placard to solicit for school fees along Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi.
According to her mother, Anne Wangechi Mureithi, Mellan was sent home on September 10 due to Sh29,177 fees arrears, and despite her efforts, she was unable to raise the amount.
With the help of her friend, Mary Wanjiru, Mellan ventured into the city streets, displaying a bold banner and pleading for assistance from well-wishers. However, their efforts barely raised Sh500.
When contacted, Mellan's mother admitted that she is a casual labourer and the only one providing for her and three other siblings, making it difficult for her to raise school fees.
"I'm just a casual labourer and I'm the only one providing for her and other three siblings," Anne Wangechi Mureithi claimed.
The school secretary, who responded to our inquiry, acknowledged that Mellan was away with others who were sent home over fee arrears, but suggested that her mother should have visited the school to discuss the matter.
"It is true that she has been having challenges but the mother should have visited the school and talk to us," the secretary said.
