On June 11th, a 26-year-old Mechanical Engineering student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) gained unauthorized access into State House, prompting a security response that left him shot and injured.

Brian Kibet Bera, 26, jumped over the fence to enter the State House compound, where he was met by security officers who ordered him to surrender. When he drew out a kitchen knife, he was shot.

Appearing before Milimani Principal Magistrate Francis Andayi on Wednesday, Bera pleaded for forgiveness, stating, 'I am pleading with President Kenyatta to forgive me. I have suffered a lot while in detention.'

His father, David Bera, also appeared in court, pleading for his son's release on medical grounds, citing depression. He recalled an instance where Brian walked from Kitale to Athi River, prompting Brian to respond, 'The reason why I walked from Kitale to Athi River is that I wanted to become a fisherman in Mombasa, and I was in the process of that journey when they intercepted me and took me to JKUAT.'

Magistrate Andayi ordered Bera to be taken to Mathari Mental Hospital for assessment before he is charged. He will be remanded at Kilimani Police Station before returning to court on Thursday.
