On July 3, 2019, Education CS George Magoha addressed senators in Naivasha and clarified that there would be no national exams for Grade Three learners. This announcement came just a week after the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) released guidelines instructing school heads to enroll Grade Three pupils for the Kenya Early Years Assessment (KEYA) under the new curriculum.
According to the Education CS, there would be no exams at Grade Three, and pupils would sit the national exams at the end of Grade Nine and Grade 12 under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). Magoha acknowledged that there could have been some confusion and aimed to correct the ambiguities with finality.
"There are certain ambiguities and I want to correct them with finality...As government, we have decided there will be an examination after Year Nine (Grade Nine) and Year 12 (Grade 12)," Magoha said.
Parents of Grade Three learners had earlier been directed to enroll their children for national assessment, but the latest announcement has brought relief to many.
